The Oldest Vine
One of the most famous sights in Maribor is the oldest vine in the world, which has withstood the test of time for over 440 years and still produces grapes every year. It grows on the façade of a historic building in Lent, where the Old Vine House is also located—a museum and promotional center for the winemaking and viticulture heritage of Styria and broader Slovenia. This exceptional vine is officially recognized in the Guinness World Records as the oldest in the world.
The vine belongs to one of the oldest indigenous grapevine varieties in Slovenia, called Modra kavčina, also known as Žametna črnina. It is a red grape variety, from which a ruby-red velvet wine is produced, known for its softness and fruity character. The grapes from the oldest vine are traditionally harvested every autumn during a special celebration, and the wine is bottled in unique bottles, often given as ceremonial gifts at the highest state and international levels.
The oldest vine is not just a botanical curiosity but a symbol of persistence, a rich winemaking tradition, and the pride of the city of Maribor, deeply intertwining its roots with the culture of wine.
