Maribor Castle
Maribor Castle stands on the northeastern edge of the old town center and is considered one of the most important architectural and historical monuments in Maribor. It was built in the 15th century as part of the city’s defensive system, and over the centuries, it has been rebuilt and extended, giving it its distinctive Baroque appearance today. The castle is situated between three important city squares—Castle Square, Freedom Square, and General Maister Square—providing it with a central location and easy access from different parts of the city.
Today, the castle houses the Maribor Regional Museum, one of the oldest and largest regional museums in Slovenia. The museum offers rich permanent collections that showcase the cultural, historical, and artistic heritage of the wider Styria region, as well as fascinating temporary exhibitions that complement its role as an important cultural center. A visit to the castle offers not only an insight into architectural history but also into the stories of the people who have shaped the identity of Maribor over the centuries.
