Main Square
Main Square is the central city square in Maribor, recently renovated to beautifully blend history with modernity. The renovation gave the square a fresh, contemporary appearance while preserving its historical value and traditional charm. By closing the square to traffic, a more pleasant pedestrian area was created, allowing visitors to enjoy the surroundings, leisurely walks, and the lively urban atmosphere.
The square is surrounded by elegant bourgeois buildings that reflect the city’s rich past. Among the most notable are the Town Hall (Rotovž), an architectural gem and seat of Maribor’s city administration, and the Plague Column, which was historically part of the city’s defensive and health measures. These monuments, along with other historic buildings around the square, tell the story of Maribor’s significance over the centuries.
Today, Main Square is also a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike, hosting various events, fairs, concerts, and cultural performances. With its historical and cultural heritage, the square stands as one of the central points of city life and is an essential part of Maribor’s identity.
